As an emerging technology derived from the Internet of Things, smart home is also a typical information physics fusion system. In recent years, the smart home market has experienced rapid growth, and related research has pointed out many security privacy issues in the field. Our research is centered on the Samsung SmartThings platform. This paper especially studies the side channel estimation technology of smart home wireless traffic. Different from the traditional method, we use this speculation technology to design and implement an abnormal behavior detection system for smart home applications, called SmartDetector. The system speculates on currently active applications by utilizing side channel information in a smart home wireless network. Further, by comparing with the expected application behavior extracted from the source code or the user interface, SmartDetector can effectively detect anomalies that may exist in the interaction between the application and the smart device. To evaluate the effectiveness of the SmartDetector, we analyzed 181 officially available applications and conducted an experimental evaluation of 60 applications with anomalous behavior based on this development. These exceptions have attacks on smart devices such as unauthorized access or event spoofing. The experimental results show that SmartDetector can effectively verify the working logic of the application in the smart home platform and has high accuracy in detecting abnormal behavior of the application.

Speaker Introduction

Prof. Zhu Haojin, receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Canada, now working in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is Young Yangtze Scholar of the Ministry of Education. His main research areas are mobile network security, IoT security, privacy protection, etc., and hosted the National Natural Science Foundation (4 projects, including 1 key project sub-project, 2 face projects, 1 youth fund). He also has seven national and provincial-level projects, including the Sub-project of National 863 Project and the Key Laboratory Open Fund. He has published 50 SCI indexed papers and 70 top international conference papers. His research work has been cited more than 5,700 times in Google Scholar, H-index 38, and SCI cited 831 times. 2018 First Prize of Natural Science of the Ministry of Education (ranked third); selected as the “Yangtze Scholar Scholars Young Scholars Program” of the Ministry of Education in 2016; JSPSFellowship of the 2017 Japan Society for the Promotion of Science; 2014 was awarded the “Outstanding Youth of the Asia-Pacific Region of the IEEE Communications Society” Scholar Awards; In 2015, the research work was selected as “2014 China’s 100 Most Influential International Academic Papers”.
